FAQs: HYPERBARIC CHAMBER

  • Inside the hyperbaric chamber, the air pressure is roughly two and a half times higher than normal air pressure, allowing your body to carry more oxygen to your organs and tissues, and supporting the healing process. Normally, oxygen is delivered through your bloodstream. However, during hyperbaric therapy, your entire body receives the treatment, extending the healing benefits of oxygen beyond the reach of your arteries. The air pressure in the chamber concentrates the delivery of oxygen to specific areas, such as a wound that needs healing. This high dose of oxygen stimulates the mitochondria in the cells, providing them with energy, and attracting healing stem cells to the impaired area.

  • While mHBOT is generally safe, there are specific conditions that may preclude individuals from receiving mHBOT sessions. These may include untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung), pregnancy, COPD, certain chemotherapy drugs, and medical implants, including pacemakers, cochlear implants, and implanted neurological devices . Additionally, individuals with seizure disorders may require evaluation to determine the suitability of mHBOT treatment. For acute illness and lifestyle habits, you should not use the mHBOT if you have cold or flu-like symptoms, alcohol consumption within 24 hours, nicotine use within 72 hours, blocked ear canal(s), blocked sinuses, otic barotraumas, or recent excessive CO2 exposure. For insulin dependent diabetics, you may take a carbohydrate source in the chamber with you. We do recommend also having a way to monitor your blood sugar while in the chamber.

  • There are little to no side effects. The most common side effect is inner ear issues, pain, or discomfort due to the rise and decline of atmospheric pressure. If you are experiencing a cold, have sinus issues, or have a history of ear trauma or surgeries, this may not be the right treatment option for you. Please discuss this with your medical provider before further considering this type of treatment.

  • For athletic recovery, one to four sessions are recommended. Sessions can be done once or twice a day. Clients must wait four hours between sessions.

For chronic conditions, a minimum of 10 total sessions over a shorter duration of time is recommended. We recommend a session or two per day. Clients must wait four hours between sessions. To follow, over a longer duration of time, twenty to forty maintenance sessions are recommended for optimal results annually.

Please inquire for individualized needs if you are working with a provider who has written you a protocol. Our functional medicine providers are also available to help assess and recommend a plan on an individual basis.

  • Our sessions are 60 minutes. Please inquire for individualized needs if you are working with a provider who has written you a protocol. Our functional medicine providers are also available to help assess and recommend a plan on an individual basis.

  • Loose, comfortable clothing is best. Instead of shoes, wear slippers or socks. Avoid wearing anything that could potentially puncture the chamber (i.e., jewelry or hair clips). We also ask that you do not wear any fragrances, including lotion, perfume, or cologne.

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an effective treatment for a variety of medical conditions, either as a primary or adjunctive treatment. Whether you’re suffering from a sports-related injury and post-recovery, fighting off an infection or looking to improve overall mental clarity.

  • During the session, you will relax in a comfortable chamber. The pressure in the chamber will gradually increase and then decrease at the end of the session. You may experience a slight popping sensation in your ears, similar to when ascending or descending in an airplane. You can rest, read, sleep or use your phone or tablet. People often report feeling less pain and a sense of relaxation and mental clarity following a session, as mHBOT is a good central nervous system de-stressor and can be helpful in addressing brain fog related to Lyme disease, MS, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, radiation treatment and chemotherapy. It is advisable that you wear comfortable clothing and not drink large amounts of fluids before entering the chamber. We ask that you do not wear perfume or cologne because some people are sensitive to these items and we don’t want the next scheduled person to be adversely affected.

  • Feel free to bring water, books, personal computers, or any other form of entertainment into the chamber. It may be helpful to have your cell phone with you. We ask that you refrain from bringing in sharp objects.

  • There is no downtime after your session. You should be able to return to normal daily activities immediately after your session. If you plan to do two sessions in one day, we do require clients to wait four hours between sessions.
