Dry needling involves the insertion of thin monofilament needles into connective tissue, such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, subcutaneous fascia, and scar tissue. Dry needles may also be used to help with neuromusculoskeletal pain syndromes, such as sciatica, foot drop, or neuralgia. Dry needling works to address pain and healing via releasing endorphins for pain relief, inhibiting inflammatory pathways, increasing blood flow to the area, remapping the brain for pain control, and activating an immune reaction at the site of injection for increased healing time.

It is similar in that both modalities use thin, stainless steel needles with the main goal of alleviating pain.
Dry Needling is a newer technique and while both practices have the goal of alleviating pain, acupuncture focuses on physical + emotional pain by opening the energy points of the body by placing needles on meridians (aka where the energy flows in the body).
Dry needling focuses on physical + neurological pain by stimulating trigger points in muscle tissue based on skeletal + neuroanatomy knowledge in order to release tension.

The first step in dry needling is an initial assessment. You will go through thorough examination of the patient's medical history, symptoms, and any previous treatments you may have previously tried. The therapist will also perform a physical examination to assess the patient's pelvic floor muscles and identify any trigger points that may be causing pain or dysfunction.

Most of our patients report feeling little to no discomfort when undergoing dry needling treatments. Our physical therapists know how to make the process as painless as possible; however, some patients may still experience a "twitch response" with the insertion of the needle.
This is comparable to a quick muscle cramp or ache. The 24-48 hours following treatment may also result in muscle soreness, which should go away on its own.
-
There are potential risks and side effects associated with pelvic floor physical therapy dry needling. These may include bruising, bleeding, and temporary discomfort at the site of the needle insertion. It is important to discuss any concerns or potential risks with your therapist before starting treatment. Sore muscles can be treated at home by applying ice and/or heat packs and drinking plenty of fluids.

Pelvic floor physical therapy dry needling is often not a one-time treatment and may require multiple sessions for optimal results. Your therapist will work with you to develop a treatment plan and schedule follow-up appointments as needed. It is also important to continue with any recommended exercises to reinforce the benefits of the treatment.
